BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLASSES
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art
that primarily focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can
successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and
proper technique. Submission techniques
consist of joint-locks and chokeholds. Brazilian
jiu-jitsu also combines practical self-defense techniques that anyone can
use. No matter your age, gender, or
size, Brazilian jiu-jitsu has something for you.
The roots of BJJ are in Japanese jiu-jitsu
of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In 1910, Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo expert, immigrated
to Brazil. Mitsuyo Maeda became friends with Gastao Gracie, an influential
businessman, and began teaching his sons jiu-jitsu. The Gracie’s refined the techniques taught to
them by Mitsuyo Maeda and created what is now known as Gracie jiu-jitsu or
Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Classes are
taught by Michael Brown. Michael is a
2-stripe blue belt. In December 2009,
Michael received his blue belt from Professor Luis “Sucuri” Togno. In May 2011, Michael began training with
Professor Arel and continues to train with him on a regular basis. Professor Arel is only the 2nd
non-Brazilian student ever promoted to black belt under the world renowned
Roberto “Gordo” Correa. In November
2011, Michael travelled to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil to train at Gracie Barra and
Evolve / Gordo Jiu-Jitsu. The local
lifestyle and training allowed Michael to see the true potential that one could
achieve through Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
